Description
Little is known about this map. It has no imprint for either the cartographer or engraver and is thus difficult to identify. The map is not described in Tooley's Collector's Guide to Maps of Africa nor in Loeb-Larocque's more detailed article on the French derivatives of Dutch maps, but it is depicted in Tooley's 1972 Sequence of Maps of Africa as plate no. IX. Tooley does not provide an attribution for this map, but simply identifies it as being by an anonymous mapmaker. Burden believes the similar Americas map is by Pierre Mariette, as he noted that the Americas map appeared on two occasions in Theatre Geographique de France which had editions published by Pierre Mariette in 1650 and 1653.
While this map appeared in Pierre Mariette's Theatre Geographique de France, it is possible that this map was actually made by a Dutch engraver, possibly even Cornelis Danckerts, who was known to work on occasion with Pierre Mariette during this period. The engraving style and the decorative elements all suggest that it may be a Dutch-produced map. As this is purely conjecture, the map's attribution is still with Pierre Mariette.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
