Description
As you might expect there is little cartographic knowledge to be gleaned form the vast interior, however, the middle of the continent is marked 'Ethiopia'. A large swathe of the eastern coast is labelled 'Cafreria', right up until the 'Horn' of Africa. Some regions are delineated however: (Sofala, Sabia and Manomotata).
Moving northward you see Nubia, Abbisinia, and Egypt, then along the Mediterranean coastline, across 'Barbary', then to the south and west to the region marked 'Zahra' and 'Zenhaga'. From Cape Verde onwards the west coast is either comprised of Guinea of Congo, down to South Africa and theland of the Hottentots. There is a simple title cartouche in the lower left corner.
Off the coast you can see The Canary Islands, The Azores, Madagascar, and a number of small islands in the Indian Ocean. A small portion of Brazil is engraves along with a small portion of Persia and the entire Arabian Peninsular
Samuel Dunn was a teacher of mathematics and navigation who published, among other things, maps and charts. Although information about his early education is lacking, by the age of nineteen he was leading his own school and teaching writing, accounting, navigation, and mathematics in the county of Devon. In 1751, he moved up to London, where he continued to teach in several schools, plus he tutored privately.
Dunn died at his home in London in January 1794. His books and maps were auctioned in a sale of well over 1,000 lots. Many of these were bought by Alexander Dalrymple, a hydrographer to the East India Company, and soon-to-be-named the very first head of the Hydrography Office.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
