Description
This sheet features four plans of towns and harbours on the Atlantic seaboard that played a key role in a conflict between Britain and Spain, lasting from 1739 to 1748, with all major operations largely ended by 1742.
The Louisbourg plan depicts several fortifications with notes on the various batteries and the fishing industry of the region. There is a detailed lettered key (a-v) on the Havana plan that identifies twenty places of interest. Featured on the plan of Cartagena is the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the most elaborate of all the fortresses built by the Spanish in their colonies.
On the plan of Portobelo there are two castles. All four plans include a distance scale, a compass rose capped with a fleur-de-lis, and soundings appear on all, excepting the Louisbourg plan.
