Description
Still missing is the continent of Antarctica and Tasmania is attached to New Holland (Australia).
The fine map appeared in Thomas Bankes' A New System of Geography.
The map shows the details of each of Captain James Cook's Voyages, with a list noting the dates of each of the voyages:
• Endeavor: August 26, 1768-July 12, 1771.
• Resolution & Adventure: July 13, 1772-July 30, 1775.
• Resolution & Discovery: July 13, 1775-August 22, 1780 (the first date is in error -- the second date is after Cook's death in Hawaii).
The tracks of each voyages are dated and include Cook's time in Hawaii, Alaska and the Northwest Coast of America, the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia and in the Antarctic Regions.
Thomas Bowen (died 1790) was an English engraver of charts. He was the son of Emanuel Bowen (1693–1767), map engraver to George II and Louis XV.
