Description
The regional network of roads, lakes, rivers and streams is quite detailed, while elevations are depicted effectively by means of hatching. The map was published in London by Andrew Drury and engraved by P. Andrews.
The total map was issued in four parts that when joined (measuring 56” x 30”). This is the bottom right portion only. It includes most of Connecticut and Long Island. It does not include the title cartouche, but does feature the dedication section and a huge oversized compass rose.
The partial map stands well on its own, and would look appropriate framed as such. The map is rare and the combined map of four parts has sold for up to $28,000.
Captain John Montresor (1736-1799) was born in Gibraltar. In 1754, at the age of 18, he served as an ensign in the 48th Regiment. From 1762 to 1764, he was intimately involved in the establishing the defence of the Niagara region. He designed and oversaw the building of Fort Niagara and Fort Erie.
Montresor was in Boston at the outset of the American Revolution. In 1778 or '79, Montresor was superseded in his role as chief engineer. He returned to England and resigned from the army in March 1779.
Later in life, after the British defeat, Montresor was repeatedly questioned over his conduct and expenditures during the war. The state eventually seized much of his property as compensation for disallowed expenses, and he died in prison, presumably as a debtor in 1799.
