Description
The left leaf describes the birth of St. John the Baptist, who was promised to his old-aged parents Zacharias and Elisabeth by the archangel Gabriel in the temple of Jerusalem and would be the pioneer for Jesus.
Zacharias did not believe the promise, and was punished by dumbness.
At St. John''s birth Zacharis was asked to write down the name for the child. He wrote John will be his name abd he regained his voice at that same moment "..scripsit dicens Johannes est nomen eius...."
The right leaf describes St. John's stay in the desert, from where he called and insisted the people to listen to Jesus''s words, sometimes in vain, "...iohannes bapt''vox clamantis in deserto.
