Description
Second sheet, the third part illustrating part of the Suez Canal which extends from the Bitter Lakes to Suez.
With several insets of profiles of the Canel.
The chart is dated 1869, the year of the official opening of the Canal.
With latitude and longitude scales, soundings, rocks, shoals, safe harbours.
Each half contains an inset presenting a sample of horizontal section of the Canal.
Engraved by Francox after the survey made by Mr. Larousse, sub-engineer and hydrographer of the French Navy.
The Suez canal, about 166 km (103 mi) long, traversing the Isthmus of Suez and linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez with the Mediterranean Sea. Built under the supervision of Ferdinand de Lesseps, it was opened in 1869 and came under British control after 1875. The British withdrew in 1956, and Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the canal.
