Description
From: Itinéraire Pittoresque de Stockholm à Naples Dessinées d'apres nature en lithog. Par C.J.Billmark. Sold by J.C.Hedbom in Stockholm, Quaranta in Naples and Goupil & Vibert in Paris.
Billmark (along with M. G. Anckarswärd) is the greatest lithographer Sweden has ever possessed.
Carl Johan Billmark arrived in Paris as a young man and lived there for most of his life, working with the best artists and craftsmen of the time. He produced several lithographic albums of high quality, some depicting European sceneries and some sceneries of his native country. He made frequent trips to Sweden to sketch originals. Billmark died during the siege of Paris in 1870.
This plate is uncolored which gives a unique opportunity to study Billmark's lithographic skills.
Title written in pencil underneath the lithography reports "Suède, Château de Calmar".

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
