Description
Provenance :Sarkis Boghossian (with his collection stamp on verso.) Born March 12, 1921 in Ambreka, a village in the region of Arabkir (historical Armenia, currently in Turkey).
Rescued from the 1915 genocide, the Boghossian family emigrated to Marseille in 1927. Sarkis attended the Armenian school in Marseille and took an active part in Armenian community life. He becomes an assiduous reader of Armenian and French poets and organizes poetry recitals.
He began to take an interest in prints and old books and began collecting prints and drawings on Armenian subjects. In 1967, he moved to Paris, and opened the bookstore "Le XIXe siècle", rue du Cherche-Midi, specialized in engravings and old books.
He collaborated with the Armenian press, notably in "Haratch", he published his memoirs on the Armenians of Marseilles and his stay on the banks of the Bosphorus.
On October 18, 1998 the French booksellers' community woke up to shocking news that Boghossian had been found dead in his Parisian flat, tortured and murdered, with a number of valuable books missing from the apartment. Police quickly traced the murderer, a French bookseller of Turkish origin and a renowned scholar with a PhD from Sorbonne specialising in Ottoman and Armenian history. He was apparently in dispute with Boghossian over a number of rare books that the latter kept as a guarantee against a cash loan. The bookseller was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison just when he was due to give a lecture at a conference in Nice titled “The Armenian merchants in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century”.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
