Description
on the left a meeting of academics at Oxford
on the right, the presentation of a doctoral thesis at Cambridge. In the centre, a female figure representing Ecclesiastical Truth, holding a whip and flaming sword and trampling on Satan and the papal tiara, other allegorical figures represent, on the left, Perseverance and Doctrine, and on the right, Mathematics and Science.
Vignettes on either side show views supposed to be of Oxford and Cambridge universities, labelled respectively "College d'Oxford/College Roial" and "College de Cambridge/Societe Royale", above which are portraits in ovals arranged as pyramids: on the Oxford side, St Bede, St Augustine, St Willibrod, "Sperm" (unidentified), Duns Scotus, Lanfranc, L Haes (unidentified), Roger Bacon, Matthew Paris, Thomas (Becket) of Canterbury, M de Westminster (unidentified), Thomas More, Thomas Hobbes, on the Cambridge side, Alcuin, St Anselm, John Wycliffe, Johannes de Sacrobosco, Giraldus Cambrensis, John Huntington (?), John Jewel, John Salisbury, Bishop of Sodor and Man (?), John Selden, John Langford, Robert Boyle, John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury, John Marsham. Other names are listed around the frames.
At the top on either side hang the coats of arms of the universities and their colleges. Engraved title, inscriptions, numbering, legends and descriptive text, all in French.
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 – 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), the Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published from 1705 to 1720.
The atlas, though published anonymously, is generally known to have been the work of the Chatelain family. Ground breaking for its time, this work included studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
