Description
The publication of the various editions was a work carried out by Jews (first generation New Christians) of Portuguese and Castilian origin who, upon being expelled from the Iberian Peninsula by the Inquisition, settled first in Italy and then in the Netherlands, already abroad.
The book starts with a magnificent engraved frontispiece illustrated with biblical scenes signed by Cornelius Muller. This edition of the Ferrara Bible is printed in Roman characters arranged in two columns.
The fourth edition of the Ferrara Bible published in Amsterdam in 1646. The frontispiece features a beautiful engraving by Cornelius Muller with representations of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, their expulsion from Paradise, the figures of Moses and Aaron, among others. On the reverse of the title page is the Preface of the 1553 edition, followed by the ordering of the Haphtorah, a Table of the Order of Books, Chapters, etc., and the Catalog of Judges, etc., as in the first edition of this bible.
After the Catalog of the Judges there is a table of the division of the Bible into Paraschae, according to the Hebrews.
This is a reissue made from the third edition printed in 1630 of the Ferrara Bible, both revised and corrected by Manasseh ben Israel. The translations of the third and fourth editions of the Ferrara Bible are attributed to the famous Portuguese typographer and professor of the Portuguese Hebrew community in Amsterdam Menasseh Ben Israel.
However, typographically, these editions are very different, mainly because the third edition of 1630 has a simple title page (which is identical to that of the 1611 edition, illustrated in the center with the Ark of the Covenant) and the fourth edition of 1647 be adorned with a magnificent engraved frontispiece illustrated with biblical scenes by Cornelius Muller.
The famous Biblia de Ferrara or Biblia dos Sepharditas (Jews of Iberian origin) was translated from Hebrew into Ladino (dialect of Castilian used by the Sephardim) and printed in Ferrara in 1553 by the famous Portuguese printer Abrão Usque (Christian name Duarte Pinhel) brother of Samuel Usque (author of the work "Consolation to the Tribulations of Israel") at the expense of Yom Tob Atias (Christian name Geronimo de Vargas Hespanhol).
