Description
Originally engraved for Jodocus Hondius II, at his death in August 1629 this map was, among 39 other copper plates, purchased by Willem Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint. Blaeu then immediately published 34 of them as part of his first atlas.
A very decorative map of the German Province of Hanover with Osnabrück at center.
The large strapwork title cartouche incorporates a fine view of the city with its many steeples dominating the city sky-line. At lower right is an inset of Reckenberg. Further embellished with a coat of arms, with small provincial armorials and a smaller cartouche.
Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) as he is more commonly known, was one of the most noted Dutch cartographers and map publisher of the 17th century.
R.V. Tooley stated that Blaeu's maps are "esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" (Tooley).
From an incomplete example of the 1634 German text edition of Blaeu's "Novus Atlas", previously owned by Johann Christoph Gesen (1639), Johann Rudolph von Metzradt (1651), Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854).
P. van der Krogt mentions two variants for the German 1634 text edition and only two examples containing proof states (Bad Münstereifel and Gotha).

Dare to go in Black. All early maps were printed in black and white; many were kept that way for a long time. A black and white map in an early and strong impression is a rarity nowadays, being so many colored up recently!
