The earliest separate map of the western hemisphere, first published in the 1540 edition of Münster's "Geographia" and reprinted for subsequent editions of the Geographia and Cosmographia.
Burden's State 6. It is the only state to include the latitude and longitude bars outside of the map image and one of the rarest of all editions of the map.
While the shape is remarkably accurate for its early date, through its wide distribution the map helped perpetuate the major misconception of the false sea of Verrazzano.
Münster, unusually, shows Newfoundland as a single large island rather than a group of smaller islands, but depicts Yucatan as an island which was a common mistake, as is the exaggerated size of Cuba and Hispaniola.
A flag on the map indicates the demarcation line set by the Treaty of Tordesillas. South America is notable for the scene depicting cannibals in Brazil. The map depicts Magellan's ship Victoria and names for the first time on a map, Mare pacificum . The geography of the Pacific is a curious melange of details from Marco Polo's thirteenth century account of his travels in India and China. Zipangu (Japan), still two or three years before its earliest known contact with Europeans, appears as a single, rectangular island, drawn north to south, and with a number of small islands around just off the California coast.
This is the oldest known shape of Japan.
