Alexey Afinogenovich Ilyin was a lieutenant general and cartographer (1832-1889). In 1856, after graduating from the Academy of the General Staff, he was at the military topographic depot, then at the quartermaster general of the main headquarters.
Borodovsky Leonid (1870 - 1906) served as an officer in eastern Siberia, made several trips to the edge of the Ussuri, the south-eastern Mongolia, Korea, China, Japan and East Turkestan, participated in the expedition of Colonel Putyata in southern Khingan. Drafted by a map of Manchuria withstood several publications, in addition, they issued a series of maps relating to the Far East, as well as the map of China, applied to the Russian edition of Parker's work, "China".
Ilyin's name is associated with the emergence and development of the first privately-owned cartographic establishment in Russia. He began his activity with the discovery in 1859 in St. Petersburg. Together with Colonel Poltoratsky lithography, which has now grown into the famous Ilyin cartographic institution.

Imperial Russia’s expansion lasted from the 1850s to the collapse of the Romanov dynasty in 1917. Russian colonization took several loosely related forms: geographic expeditions, border-demarcation, and map-making. Grand narratives of Russian expansion beyond Siberia often overlook the role of these as independent agents of colonization, but they are examined in the following pages.
Russian geographic expeditions collected the knowledge of the geography, natural conditions, and people that was necessary to conquer those regions. Border demarcation and new maps helped legitimize the territorial conquest and created new knowledge about these areas.
A closer look at these colonization processes reveals the weakness of Imperial Russia’s new frontiers in East Asia and the gap between the ideology of expansionism and developments on the ground. Russian colonization was driven by several economic incentives, including the need to establish an agricultural base for the development of Siberia, to protect Russian economic and territorial gains in the North Pacific, and to find new trade routes to Asian markets.
This colonization went through several stages: Russia’s annexation of the area north of Amur River and east of Ussuri River (1850–60); a period of relative peace (1860–95); and Russia’s advance into Manchuria (1895–1904).

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
