Description
Very rare. Jodocus (also Joost or Josse) Van der Baren was a painter who flourished in in Louvain in the first decade of the 17th Century.
His drawings of Louvain and Heverle appeared in the 1610, "Lovanium: id est, opidi et academiae eius descriptio. Libri tres.", Justus Lipsius.
Leuven is shown from a height outside the Mechelsepoort. The foreground is filled by numerous characters, small groups of talking academics, a plowing farmer with a pair of two horses.
At the bottom left is a vineyard on a slope, also within the city walls, on the hill to the right of the Keizersberg and for the "Verloren Cost" there are vineyards.
On the left the Dyle flows out of the city, there is a small and a big boat.
Between the second and the first city wall there is still a lot of undeveloped terrain. At the front, for the Commandery of the Hospitallers, there is a plain with a circle and a high pole.
Beyond the ring wall are in the background from left to right Leuven is weergegeven vanaf een hoogte buiten de Mechelsepoort.
These places outside the city are marked with the letters A to F, explained in the left column of the legend below. The numbers 1 to 84 follow with all gates, churches and buildings between the first and second wall, inner gates and buildings in the inner city.
A wind rose is central in the foreground.
