Description
Finely engraved map of the Vaigach Straits, from Bertius's rare miniature atlas. The map focuses on the straits between Novaya Zemlya and the Russian mainland, which had been discovered by western Europeans during their search a northern passage to Asia.
The first visit was by Hugh Willoughby in 1553, then another in 1596, during one of this 3 voyages in search of the Northeast Passage, Willem Barentsz rounded the north point of Novaya Zemlya, and wintered on the east coast near the northern tip.
The map shows the straight separating Vaygach Island from the mainland. At the time, Vaygach Island was considered to be a part of Novaya Zemlya. The map identifies a number of place names, and includes sailing ships.
First published in 1598 in his Caert-Thresoor, the plates were executed by the most famous engravers in Amsterdam, including Petrus Kaerius and Jodocus Hondius I. The atlas set a new standard for minor atlases. The small maps is extremely well engraved. This map reflects the level of cartography in Amsterdam at the turn of the 17th century, where up to date information on newly discovered regions was readily available (Koeman).

Bertius (1565-1629) was a Flemish cartographer, theologian, historian and geographer. Although he published much in the fields of history, theology and mathematics, he is perhaps best known as a cartographer. His works were heavily influenced by the earlier works of Mercator, which date from the late sixteenth century. He was connected by marriage to Jacobus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere, both excellent cartographers, who would influence his later life. He was ‘Cosmographer’ to the court of King Louis XIII.

- Items will be listed for 7 days. In the first day of the sale, users are only able to add items to their "My Buy or Bid" page".
- Starting at 4.00 PM EST (Amsterdam 22.00) the following day up to the closing you may purchase an item at the Buy price.
- Once the Buy price is paid the sale for this item has closed.
- We show the "Bid & Ask spread" (to define the gap between the minimum accepted bid and Buy price.)
- Items that have received bids within the BidAsk spread are sold at the highest bid at closing.
