Description
The Barnum & Bailey grösste Schaustellung der Welt. Grösstes, bestes, grossartigtes vergnugungs-unternehmen auf der Erde. (The world's largest show).
In this horse poster, the circus is announcing a show of over 400 thoroughbred horses from around the globe, it seems as though nearly every one of those 400 horses is pictured here!
This is the rare German text variant.
As the English circus collapsed, the big American companies maintained the prestige of the circus. In 1871, there existed in the United States 22 big circuses all traveling, among them Phineas Barnum who launched an operation of a unparalleled scale by producing a four-masted tent that was later extended to six. This required a rail transport with 21 wagons.
Barnum played an important role in development advertising displays and in the art of media effects (parade, manipulations, deceptions). The circus had 500 horses. After a terrible competition with Bailey for supremacy, Barnum came to associate with James Bailey who in fact, ran the company from 1881 to 1906.
After Barnum's death in 1891, Bailey remained alone and undertook in 1897 a great five-year European tour. It was a real revolution in the circus world. The installation of the long tent of 200 meters and the rigorous organization of this true traveling city of a thousand people was a model efficiency.
The first performance in France, in Paris, in 1901, took place in the presence of the family of the President of the Republic, the President of the Council and ten ministers. The Ringling Brothers then took advantage of Barnum's absence in the United States.
