Description
Share of 1 000 Florins d'Allemagne (1 000 Guilder) of the "Triester Handelsgesellschaft" (Société du Commerce d'Asie & d'Afrique) signed by Duke Charles de Proli (General manager of the company) and Guillaume Bolts. The share certificate is written out to the Antwerp Merchant Michael Jean Anthoine Knijff.
The Triester East India company was the last great colonial enterprise by the Habsburger. Empress Maria Theresia gave Guillaume Bolts permission to start the company in Trieste, mainly financed by Antwerp bankers.
The Trading Compagnie of Trieste went down in history as one of the last great colonial companies of the Habsburgs. The share which is printed on handmade paper was signed in the original by Count Charles de Proli as well as additionally by Guilleaume Bolts. This is one of the historically most significant commercial papers of the 18th century.

After Trieste had been declared a free port together with Fiume by Emperor Karl VI, it held a major significance for the trade of the Habsburgs. Since to them the access to the seas via the Austrian Netherlands remained barred, Trieste was to become the base for the East India trade. In 1775 Guilleaume Bolts received the permission of Empress Marie Theresia to found an East Indian trade company in Trieste.
In 1781 the first shares were disbursed with great success. The famous Antwerp merchant Charles de Proli (son of the founder of the Imperial Indian Company), who was also involved in the insurance industry of Antwerp, became the manager. However, the company finally deteriorated due to the French and British resistance and the failed expedition to China which put the company into insolvency.

- Items will be listed for 7 days. In the first day of the sale, users are only able to add items to their "My Buy or Bid" page".
- Starting at 4.00 PM EST (Amsterdam 22.00) the following day up to the closing you may purchase an item at the Buy price.
- Once the Buy price is paid the sale for this item has closed.
- We show the "Bid & Ask spread" (to define the gap between the minimum accepted bid and Buy price.)
- Items that have received bids within the BidAsk spread are sold at the highest bid at closing.
- For bids entered within the BidAsk spread, we use the proxy-bidding process, so you are getting the item at the lowest possible price.
