Description
The original was a landmark map in the cartography of the region, centered on the Mississippi, now better delineated than before, and renowned for the first map reference to Texas repeated here in the translation Mission d'los Teyas established in 1716 . Numerous annotations appear on the map, including reference in the Texas / Louisiana coastal region to Wandering Indians & Man-eaters and a key to symbols used for habitations indicates those of the Indians, Promiscuous Nations, and Nations Destroyed .
John Senex's A New General Atlas of the World was, strangely. the only early 18th century English attempt at emulating the success of the French and Dutch mapmakers' folio atlases. Other London mapmakers concentrated on very large, or very small format atlases, separate issues or chart books: whereas Senex produced his maps in folio format.
