Description
The interior of the peninsula is from various sources, particularly materials furnished for the accompanying work by Aloys Sprenger M.D. and from other documents obtained by Plate. The information related to Mesopotamia and its rivers is based on surveys conducted under Francis Rawdon Chesney.
The map was commissioned by Francis Rawdon Chesney for his “The Expedition For The Survey Of The Rivers Euphrates And Tigris”.
It was originally issued in 1847 under the title “Arabia by William Henry F. Plate L.L.D. ….
Drawn for Colonel Chesney’s Work of his Euphrates Expedition”. Although less than 5% of the map’s data and content are based on materials provided by Chesney, and in spite of Chesney lack of involvement in the preparation of the other 95% of the map (Arabian Peninsula, Syria, Egypt and Nubia), Chesney requested a revised version of the map to be issued in 1849 for inclusion in Chesney’s above referenced publication, with a changed sub-title which states that the map was laid down chiefly from original surveys under the superintendence of Lieut. Colonel Chesney.
The sole differences between the two maps is the title and the incorrect credit given to Chesney.
Only one copy of the 1847 maps appears to have survived and is held at the British Library (see https://www.qdl.qa/en/archive/81055/vdc_100023409888.0x000002 for an image of the 1847 version of the map).
