Description
A pair of very scarce WWI German maps highlighting Europe as it currently was, and Europe as it may become. The maps were produced as part of an 8 page booklet produced by a Berlin bookseller Max Pasch in the latter half of the Great War.
The booklet was a warning to Germans as to what would happen if they (the allies) won. The booklet centers around 2 double-page maps: 1. The Europe of the Future. 2. Today's Europe.
Pasch laments that the map of future Europe is a vision as set down by the allies (especially France) that may well involve the complete dismemberment of Germany and Austria-Hungary; the disintergration of Prussia, and the creation of a newly reconstituted Poland.
The impact of these changes on all parties is outlined in the surrounding text. Pasch further argues that Germany will be left in pieces, and he raised the question of war reparations, and Germany's ability to pay them, even over an extended period of time.
The second map covering present day Europe offers an altogether more optimistic outlook for Germany, an alternative vision of present-day Europe, as set down by the central powers and based on their perceptions of the present war situation, and on the plans of the German and Austrian armies.
The second map is a direct counter-punch and response to the first map. The surrounding text explains that England has a quarter of her navy and one half of her merchant fleet slumbering on the sea floor; Belgium is almost totally occupied (97.5%); Frances northern borders are under German occupation; Italy is hoping for some Imperial Austrian and Albanian territories, and control of the Adriatic; Montenegro and Serbia are both occupied; Romania is half occupied; Russia has lost about 285,000 sq km's and much of its industrial base; Poland is re-occupied and must now question her status as a former Russian protectorate; Germany and Austria-Hungary is now stronger and more united.
