VALK, G. / L. - Amsterdam, after 1750- A very rare 15-inch (39cm.) diameter celestial globe made up of two sets of twelve finely engraved and hand-colored gores and two polar calottes (70°) laid to the ecliptic poles of a papier-maché and plaster sphere, the axis through the celestial poles.

DE CAUS, S. - Carte Universelle, signed 'par S.de Caus Ingenieur et Architecte du Roy 1624 An oval manuscript world map on vellum sheet, ink and wash, 490x790mm., coastlines colored in outline, surrounded with eight oval or circular vignettes of French possessions or areas of interest settlements. Parts of the map are heightened with gold.

(Amsterdam, 1670)  Finely hand-colored by the master colorist Dirk Jansz. van Santen, heightened with gold and decorated with ships, wind roses, large cartouches.

Maria Sibylla Merian was the daughter of the well-known Swiss engraver/publisher Matthaeus Merian. Her mother was Dutch, and after Matthaeus' early death she married the flower painter Jacob Marrell.

Tradition has it that it was one of his pupils, Johann Graff of Nuremberg, who first taught Maria to paint, and certainly they later married. Two of Maria's primary interests were botany and entomology and the present work reflected that interest.
