Description
Martin Waldseemuller's issue of "Geographia," published in 1513 and 1520, was one of the most important atlases of the first half of the sixteenth century as the Ptolemaic body of maps were complemented by new ‘modern’ outlines.
This 'modern' outline is a distinct improvement on the Ptolemaic outline - Waldseemuller has corrected the slanting Scotland and Cornwall and has added many new towns, most notably along the southern and eastern coasts of England and Ireland - areas well known to European sailors and merchants. The British Isles are shown as on Joan de la Cosa's chart of about 1500. London and the Thames are named in the interior, along with the hills dividing Scotland and England. The south coast of England -most visited by mariners- has over 25 named localities.
Ireland is pear-shaped, following the traditional marine chart, with the 'purgatorium of S.Patrick' clearly marked.
Of particular interest is the island of Brazil off the west coast of Ireland, which, although purely a mythical conception, continued to appear on many maps for about 100 years.
