Description
Stokes suggests that the view was drawn sometime between 1653 and 1655, before New York's wall construction. The cartouche is flanked by a native American man with a bow and arrows and a woman. Decorative elements include animals, such as turkey, beavers, rabbits, bears, native Americans, and canoes, and representations of two native American villages.
The first two editions of the map (1655-56) are known in only a handful of copies. This is the third edition issued in 1684 and shows Philadelphia for the first time. The fourth edition, with the added privilege language, was also published in 1684.
