Description
Centered on the Philippines. The cartographic controversy as to the delineation of New Guinea as an island or an Australian peninsula is raised by Mortier and solved by giving both renderings (see below).
With good detail on Japan an Korea here called "R DE TIOCENCOUK ats CAOLI ou COREE". Only the place names "Sior" (Seoul), Chètio" and "Cunlo" are mentioned, in the sea the island "Figma" and "Sagsiang".
According to S.Dewez ; Australia is named 'Nouvelle Hollande' and many of the early Dutch discoveries are charted. Hartog's 1616 west coast discoveries are recorded 'Dirck Hartog's Ree', 'T'landt de Eendracht ou Terra Concordiae' and Gaullaume Rivierre decoueft. 1616' (Willem's River).
De Wit's 1628 discoveries are noted 'C.F.de Wit Terra Dececta 1628', Carstensz' 1623 discoveries on the Cape York Peninsula made in the 'Pera', as well as the 'Arnhem' discoveries by Van Colster (from the Carstensz voyage) are well labelled, as are the discoveries made during Tasman's second voyage of 1644.
More Dutch discoveries in Australia are noted on the inset map. They include those by Pieter Nuyts (1627), the Van Leeuwenin in 1622, and Houtman 1619 discoveries (incorrectly noted as 1620).
Mortier tackles the geographical controversies of whether or not Australia is joined to New Guinea and whether New Guinea is a single island or two separate islands, in a unique way. He effectively covers all possibilities. Cartographically he shows New *Guinea as two sepate touching islands. These are attached to Australia; but using different colors on each landmass, he effectively sepatares them, leaving the issues open to interpretation.Mapping of Australia [+]
Hard to find in original colors, town spots heightened with gold and mint condition.
