A Map of the Discoveries made by Capt.n Will.m Dampier in the Roebuck in 1699.

Uncommon and important map showing the New Britain Island in the Bismarck Sea. The map includes also the Indonesian island of Timor and surrounding islands, Irian Jaya and part of Papua New Guinea.
Dampier mapped the north of New Guinea and determined that New Britain was an island. The south coast was left undiscovered for several years. An engraved text gives a short history.

Dampier's 1697 voyage of discovery to New Holland had originally called for him to round the Horn and to approach New Guinea from the east coast of Australia. But due to a late departure and the onset of winter it was decided to follow the Dutch route around Africa.
Despite a less than seaworthy ship Dampier managed to land his crew on Dirk Hartog island off the coast of Western Australia and soon after headed north looking for fresh water. Some 50 years earlier Abel Tasman had charted the northwest coast of Australia but had left large gaps in his charts.
Dampier, certain there was a passage to the south seas, headed for Timor. After a refit and supplies, Dampier headed east and on the first day of 1700 sighted the west coast of New Guinea.
